Lead The Way
Lead the Way leads have been designed to provide a visual clue to make others aware of what kind of temperament a dog has – just like the Traffic Light Bandana’s.
By using the leads while out on walks, you are also advocating for the protection of our precious wildlife as only those that pass a short, educational quiz can purchase a Lead the Way lead. The Department of Conservation will be using the established traffic light system of Red, Green and Orange to represent whether you’ll be sharing the beach with wildlife and what you need to do when on the beach yourself or with your dog.
Please remember there is Space for Each, Share the beach and have your lead on you at all times.
Green
Green leads are used by dogs who are happy to be around other dogs/people most of the time. Ask the owner before you come near and keep your lead on you in case wildlife appear.
Orange
Orange leads are used by dogs who are at times not okay with strange people or dogs. Please put your dog on a leash, to ensure you keep a distance from wildlife on the beach.
Yellow
Yellow leads are used by dogs who are blind, deaf or are vulnerable in another way. This lead is a great tool for you, it keeps your dog safe, and wildlife too.
Red
Red leads are used by dogs who don’t like socialising with unfamiliar dogs and/or people. Place your dog on a leash to give them some space.
